Simple Ways to Care for Your Light Fixtures
Light fixtures don't ask for much, but a little regular care goes a long way toward keeping them looking — and working — like new. Here are a few simple habits worth building in.
Dust First, Always
Before any deeper cleaning, a soft microfiber cloth or a duster on a low setting removes most of the buildup that dulls a fixture's finish over time. This alone, done every few weeks, prevents most of the grime that's harder to deal with later.
Know Your Finish Before You Clean It
Metal finishes, glass, and fabric shades don't all respond the same way to cleaning products. A damp cloth is usually safe for glass and most metal finishes; fabric shades are better handled with a dry brush or a vacuum attachment on low suction. When in doubt, test on a small, hidden area first.
Turn It Off and Let It Cool
Always switch off and unplug (or flip the breaker for hardwired fixtures) before cleaning, and give bulbs time to cool down first. It's a small step that avoids both burns and the risk of a hot bulb cracking from contact with a damp cloth.
Check the Bulb Type Every So Often
If a fixture feels dimmer than it used to, it's not always the fixture's fault — it might just be time for a fresh bulb. Keeping the correct wattage and bulb type on hand (check the fixture's specifications) also helps avoid overheating.
Give Metal Finishes an Occasional Polish
For fixtures in brass, bronze, or chrome, an occasional gentle polish (appropriate to that specific finish) keeps them from looking tired. This isn't a weekly job — a few times a year is usually enough to keep them looking sharp.
None of this takes long. A few minutes of care every month or two is generally enough to keep a good fixture looking good for years, rather than months.
