How to Choose the Right Lighting for Every Room in Your Home
Lighting is one of those things you don't notice until it's wrong. Too dim over the kitchen counter, too harsh in the bedroom, or just... not quite right in the living room. The good news is that choosing the right fixture for each space isn't complicated once you know what to look for.
Living Room: Layer, Don't Flood
Avoid relying on a single overhead light to do all the work. A floor lamp in the reading corner, a table lamp by the sofa, and a central pendant or flush mount together create layers of light you can adjust depending on the moment — bright for hosting, soft for a quiet evening in.
Kitchen: Function First, Then Style
Task areas like countertops and islands need brighter, more direct light. Pendant lights over an island are a classic choice for a reason — they light the workspace without taking up counter room. Save the softer ambient fixtures for the parts of the kitchen where you're not chopping vegetables.
Bedroom: Warm, Low, and Dimmable if Possible
This is the one room where softer almost always wins. Bedside table lamps or wall sconces let you read comfortably without the harsh wash of an overhead light right before bed. If you can, choose warmer bulbs here — they make a noticeable difference in how restful the room feels.
Entryway and Hallways: Make a Small Statement
These are transition spaces, but they're also the first and last thing you see each day. A single well-chosen fixture — a pendant, a flush mount with some character — does more for the space than you'd expect for such a small footprint.
The short version: match the fixture to what actually happens in that room, and layer your light sources instead of relying on one. Once you start thinking room by room instead of light by light, the rest tends to fall into place.
